Food for Thought – Growing Global Food Citizens

21st December 2015 by Erin Gray

Following a successful bid to Education Scotland ‘Food for Thought’ Fund, the City of Edinburgh Council ran the Growing Global Food Citizens (GGFC) project again in September 2015. GGFC offered staff from 12 city schools the opportunity to take part in continuous professional development, sharing good practice, gaining knowledge and increasing teacher confidence to teach about sustainable food systems. Grants were awarded to participating schools to develop their own practical food education projects with pupils, and take what they had learned on the course back to the classroom.

Next steps include the development of an Edinburgh food education network with CEC staff from the Children and Families department, catering services and the Soil Association Scotland. Schools are working on a range of food education projects as a result of the Food for Thought Fund. Read the report all about the project for more information.

Edinburgh has become the first European capital to endorse a plant-based diet to tackle the climate emergency.

“We are acknowledging that food systems are a main driver of the climate ..”
