Potential community garden or growing space!

9th August 2016 by Erin Gray

Cairdean House Care Home in Colinton is offering the use of its extensive grounds to the local community for gardening and therapeutic activities. The home, which is managed by Care UK, is situated at the junction of Redford Road and the Dreghorn Link to the Edinburgh City Bypass, and is served by Lothian Buses route number 16.

The grounds surround the building on all sides, and are currently landscaped with lawns, trees, flower beds and several seating areas. There is also a small family of chickens on site! Care UK would like to see these facilities used as a community resource by local people. This could mean:

  • a venue for young people to learn gardening maintenance skills;
  • a safe area for children’s groups for picnics and play;
  • a community-run orchard;
  • small plots for growing vegetables;
  • an attractive meeting place for arts and therapy groups.

The home also has indoor facilities available for the public, including a café.

If you or your group would like to know more about this fantastic opportunity, please contact Rob Ford, Community Gardening Development Officer with the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust, either by email (rob@elgt.org.uk) or mobile (07908 844173).

Edinburgh has become the first European capital to endorse a plant-based diet to tackle the climate emergency.

“We are acknowledging that food systems are a main driver of the climate ..”
